A Birch Bay day in May ...

Sun's a-shining, tide's still out, but coming back in, people are barefoot out on the tideflats enjoying the feel of the sand and the water, the first of the skimboarders are out, colorful plastic pails and kiddie shovels have been brought out of winter storage and put to work creating holes or sandcastles.
It's Mother's Day, as well. Lots of families treating mum to a day at the beach.
Yesterday lots of heron were wading in the tidepools, a seasonal cue. People are putting up their floral hanging baskets and sprucing up their yards, and there's the smell of BBQ in the air. Bouys are starting to dot the tideflats.
A new vendor down by the Beach House is renting kayaks, bicycles, etc., and has a charming little gift shop.
I love witnessing the bay coming alive again after the winter.
