Thoughts on a 1926 Birch Bay Cottage ...

It’s Memorial Day weekend. I held an Open House at an adorable beach cottage built in 1926. It had been remodeled a couple of years ago by the current owner, who passed away recently and the family decided to put the cottage on the market. People walking by stopped in to "looky-loo," others had seen it advertised in The Northern Light and on Craig’s List and stopped in since they were celebrating the holiday here in Birch Bay anyway. One of the previous owners also dropped by with a couple of friends.
It was fascinating to learn from him what the cottage was like before the remodel. I was regaled by their stories of family fun and games and plenty of crab fests that took place over the years in that cottage. The personalities of the inhabitants came to life. Family members had died and they spoke lovingly of wives and brothers who had laughed and enjoyed themselves in the cottage, and their laughter was missed.
Since 1926 that little cottage has been silent witness to the ebb and flow of people and many historical times when our country was in battle.

I got to thinking that Memorial Day is somewhat similar in that we all have family members who died while protecting our country, our communities, our families. And we miss their laughter and their presence. But we remember them.

Join with me, as I remember not only my own family members who died in the service of our country, but all the fine and brave men and women who served.
Let’s not forget their sacrifice.
